ASK MS. ENCOURAGEMENT – Why can’t I forgive the people who have hurt me badly?

brochure 1-WEB-largeQUESTION: Dear Ms. Encouragement, I was abused when I was a child and then I was betrayed by my best friend as an adult.  Why can’t I forgive the people who have hurt me badly?     – Broken and Bruised

ANSWER: Dear Broken and Bruised, first allow me to say that I am so sorry you were hurt so badly by others.  Regardless of the circumstances, nothing ever is acceptable when abuse, especially as a child, is concerned. Again, I am so sorry that you had to experience such pain and betrayal in your life.

Second, you asked why can’t you forgive the people who have hurt you.  The short answer is that you can easily forgive anyone, even those who hurt you badly.  However, it is difficult to forgive because of the beliefs that are attached to forgiving.  We often don’t want to forgive because we falsely believe forgiveness means reconciliation.  Just because we forgive someone does NOT mean that we have to be in a relationship with that person unless we desire.  In cases where harm is still in place, relationship might be a negative thing to do.

Another reason why we believe we cannot forgive is because the harm that was done to us was severe and the idea of forgiving that person is excusing what they did.  Forgiveness does not excuse any behavior and actually is not so much for the one doing the harm as it is for the one who received the harm.  Forgiveness helps us to say, “Because I choose not to allow you to have one more moment of control and power over my life, I am releasing you from the expectations I have of you to right a wrong or apologize.”  Forgiveness is for us so that we can move forward in our lives.

Last, we can feel a sense of guilt concerning forgiveness because of what we read in the Lord’s prayer when Jesus states the reason why we should forgive is that God will not forgive us if we don’t. However, Paul states in Colossians 3:13  the reason why we should forgive is because Jesus forgave us everything when He died on the cross. The later is true.  When Jesus gave the Lord’s prayer, he had not died yet and therefore we were not under grace but the law.  To believe that God would not forgive us after Jesus’ death would make God a liar.  If Jesus died for all of our sins (past, present and future) that would mean God is saying, “Although you have already been forgiven of all your sins, what I really meant was that in the case of you not forgiving, I won’t really forgive unless you forgive.”  That does not make sense and makes God two-faced.  The reason why we should forgive others is simply because we have been forgiven everything.

ANNOUNCEMENT- Release of Charlotte’s new book, “A Purpose in the Pain” is Avaliable

A PURPOSE IN THE PAIN COVER-FRONTHey everyone, I wanted to announce that my latest book is available to you through my website before the official release. I am so excited about this book. As you know, I did not plan to write another book for a long while.  However, so many people in my life were struggling and going through suffering while believing that either they were doing something wrong or felt they wanted to give up.

Each day marriages disintegrate, ministries fail, loved ones die, jobs and homes are lost and in the midst of our suffering, we struggle. Added to our suffering is the longing for purpose and meaning.  Added to our struggle is the guilt that we have done something wrong or our faith is lacking because of our strenuous efforts in the face of difficulties or opposition in the midst of our suffering. After a time, we give up hope and then stop.

“A Purpose in the Pain” shows a different perspective of struggling and suffering and how it could be a mark of purpose and calling, not failure or lack of faith.  This book is not about finding a way to escape suffering, but a story of a breathtaking journey of love through suffering.   “A Purpose In The Pain” is the true story about the unexpected, humorous, and miraculous ways God uses suffering and struggles to reveal His purpose, calling and plans for our lives.

“I would not wish the journey of my life upon anyone.  However, if given the choice to relive my life or change the events, knowing what I know now, I would not change one single moment.”
